Thanks for being part of our story.
Birch & Alder opened in 2022 but the history of the rustic building goes back to the 1960s. With all of its signs of age and its funky Alaska DIY vibe, we absolutely love it. We’re thankful that the view from these windows is the same as it was when this building was new. Snow-capped Chugach Mountains still rise above the ever-changing tides of Turnagain Arm. Beluga whales follow salmon, bald eagles nest in the trees, and the historic Alaska Railroad passes by. We’re perched just off the Seward Highway, along one of the most scenic drives in Alaska, and even though we’re only 14 miles south of Anchorage, we are truly a world apart.
The beauty surrounding our remote location is transformative and important. We believe food is transformative and important as well. Food brings people of diverse backgrounds together in perfect harmony, creating an understanding of cultures and people like nothing else can. It is the only art that touches all of our senses, it is a love language that everyone understands, a safe space.
The food we make is a collection of childhood memories of tastes and textures transformed through a lifetime of exploration, travel, thoughts, feelings, emotions, desires, combinations and calculations. When you are here with your friends and loved ones communing around a table, we hope you will find yourself somewhere between pleasure and peace, immersed in the moment. We are full of gratitude for the opportunity to serve you, our community and our visitors.
